Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or EVP, is the phenomenon of capturing ghost voices, either on audio or video tape, or on digital recorder. An EVP occurs when a voice can be heard on a recording that is not audible at the time of recording. There are varying theories as to how EVP's occur. Some people suggest that the frequency of the sound is beyond what the human ear can hear. Others have theorized that an EVP occurs when a spirit manipulates the recording device directly.

EVP's are often helpful in determining the specific nature of a haunting. There will often be answers to direct questions during an investigation which may be crucial to shedding light on the cause of a haunting.
